چکیده

We summarize the main results from our SCUBA survey of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 3. Analysis of our sample of LBGs reveals a mean flux of S850 =0.6±0.2mJy, while simple models of emission based on the UV properties predict a mean flux about twice as large. Known populations of LBGs are expected to contribute flux to the weak sub-mm source portion of the far-IR background, but are not likely to comprise the bright source (S850 > 5mJy) end of the SCUBA-detected source count. The detection of the LBG, Westphal-MM8, at 1.9mJy suggests that deeper observations of individual LBGs in our sample could uncover detections at similar levels, consistent with our UV-based predictions. By the same token, many sub-mm selected sources with S850<2mJy could be LBGs. The data are also consistent with the FarIR/β relation holding at z = 3.

A search for the submillimetre counterparts to Lyman break galaxies

We have carried out targetted sub-mm observations as part of a programme to explore the connection between the rest-frame UV and far-IR properties of star-forming galaxies at high redshift, which is currently poorly understood. On the one hand the Lyman break technique is very effective at selecting z ∼ 3 galaxies. On the other hand ‘blank field’ imaging in the sub-mm seems to turn up sources r...

Evidence for a Major Merger Origin of High Redshift Sub-millimeter Galaxies

Sub-mm detected galaxies located at redshifts z > 1 host a major fraction of the bolometric luminosity at high redshifts due to thermal emission from heated dust grains, yet the nature of these objects remains a mystery. The major problem in understanding their origin is whether the dust heating mechanism is predominantly caused by star formation or active galactic nuclei, and what triggered th...

Proto–Galactic Starbursts at High Redshift

We have computed the evolving ultraviolet-millimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by proto-galactic starbursts at high redshift, incorporating the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium in a consistent manner. Dust extinction is calculated in a novel way, that is not based on empirical calibrations of extinction curves, but rather on the lifetime of molecular clouds which ...

We use deep HST STIS and NICMOS images of three spectroscopically confirmed galaxy counterparts of high-redshift damped Lyα (DLA) absorbers (one of which is a new discovery) to test the hypothesis that high-redshift DLA galaxies are Lyman-break galaxies. If this hypothesis is correct the emission properties of DLA galaxies must lie within the range of emission properties measured for Lyman-brea...

Expected Sub-mm Emission and Dust Properties of Lyman Break Galaxies at High Redshift

We investigate expected sub-mm emission and dust properties of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The SCUBA Deep Survey (Hughes et al., 1998) provides an upper limit of the 850μm flux densities of the LBGs. With this constraint, we argue that a typical ultra-violet to far-infrared spectral shape of the high-redshift LBGs is rather close to a template spectrum of low...
